Painting is a very effective enrichment activity, and the orangutans are really getting the hang of it. Orangutans learn important skills through painting and other playful activities. The apes learn to take an item, such as a paintbrush, and give it back. They safely experience new textures and smells, and they develop a comfortable rapport with their trainers. For each successful step in the painting process, the orangutan artists receive a food reward like fruit, veggies or juice.
