IUCN Aquatic Red List Officer

Main Purpose of the Job:

Working closely with the IUCN network, in particular the IUCN Red List Partnership Coordinator, The New Mexico Biopark Society Staff, Albuquerque Biopark Staff and the global aquarium and zoo community, the post holder will play a key role in progressing the IUCN Barometer of Life towards the goal of assessing the extinction risk of 160,000 species by 2020. This position will focus on assessing the extinction risk faced by priority aquatic species, both freshwater and marine, for inclusion on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In doing this, the position will help to dramatically expand the understanding of conservation status of aquatic species globally; laying the much needed foundation for prioritized conservation planning and action across the IUCN and aquarium and zoo community.

Key Requirements: 

Qualifications:

Educated to Bachelor level, preferably with a background in biological sciences/conservation or related fields.

• A high level of proficiency in scientific writing in English. 

• Experience with mapping tools/software (such as GIS) desirable

• Must be legally eligible for employment within the United States

• Self-motivated with an attention to detail.

• Demonstrable experience in scientific and public engagement, including good presentation skills.

• A commitment to the role of aquariums and zoos in conservation.

• Ability to communicate effectively between stakeholders.

• Ability to work well in a global team of Red List officers to problem solve, self-manage and find solutions.

• An eagerness to expand personal knowledge-base and adapt to new challenges.

Key Areas of Responsibility: 

Key functions as the Albuquerque, IUCN Plant Red List Officer:

• Receive training and ongoing development from the IUCN Red List Partnership Coordinator and the IUCN Red List Unit, including:

• Complete ‘Introduction to the IUCN Red List’ online course, having passed with 75%.

• Undertake a two-day Red List assessor workshop with a qualified Red List trainer

• With the IUCN Red List Partnership coordinator, based at The Deep UK, together with IUCN Specialist Groups and Biodiversity Units, jointly oversee the assessment process of priority aquatic species for publication on the IUCN Red List. This includes:

• Researching and writing assessments for priority aquatic species;

• Serving as reviewer for assessments prior to publication.

• Species-specific background research,

• Organising and facilitating international workshops and meetings as needed,

• Writing proposals, reports and scientific papers

• Engaging with and liaise with stakeholders and partners of the IUCN SSC and Red List

• Play a key role in promoting the New Mexico Biopark Society and Albuquerque Biopark / IUCN partnership and the IUCN Red List

• To Albuquerque Biopark staff and visitors through regular talks and workshops

• Various media and conference opportunities to the general public, the aquarium community and the wider conservation community.

• Work with the IUCN SSC Strategic Partnership Director and Red List Partnership Coordinator to develop and deliver Red List Training as needed particularly to staff from botanic gardens, zoos and aquariums across the Americas.

Line-manage Red List interns and volunteers at Albuquerque Biopark and New Mexico Biopark Society as needed

Other Responsibilities:

• Extend own knowledge of scientific issues relevant to the work of the SSC and pursue training in required skills;

• Undertake any other duties as needed
